Eco-Minds
New Zealand Forum 2009
Philippines names 3 representatives
Three students have been chosen to represent the Philippines to the 3rd Asia Pacific Eco-Minds Forum in New Zealand in 2009.

Lawrence Limjuco, Nestor Necesito and Gerard Lorenz Penecilla will officially be proclaimed as Eco-Minds winners in an awards presentation ceremony to be held on September 25, 2008.

Lawrence Limjuco
Lawrence Limjuco is a fifth year BS Chemical Engineering student of the Ateneo de Davao University.
In his paper, Lawrence underscores the importance of scientific research in addressing different environmental issues.
In his hometown where durian is a major produce, he proposes to use the durian peelings, which contributes to the garbage problem, as beddings for growing edible mushroom.
He believes that people will be encouraged to participate in environmental initiatives if solutions are easy to implement and at the same time, can be developed as a community-based livelihood programme.

Nestor Necesito
Nestor Necesito is a fourth-year BS Accountancy student of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas in Iloilo City.
Despite the focus of his undergraduate studies, his fascination with science remains steadfast. Proof is his accolades from national science fairs and scientific research competitions.
In his paper, Nestor recognizes the potential of the upside-down sea jelly to help in the process of bioremediation of marine and water pollution.
He has a special interest in marine pollution mitigation following an oil spill that happened in Guimaras Island two years ago, which is close to his university. Nestor explains that the enzymes of the upside-down sea jellies will act as bio-cleaners and will help in the degradation of oil in water.
Gerard Lorenz Penecilla
Gerard Lorenz Penecilla is a fourth-year BS Biology student of West Visayas State University in Iloilo City.
His passion for science has earned him numerous awards in scientific research and science competitions.
In addressing environmental problems, Gerard presented in his paper how creative and innovative activities could be utilized to motivate the members of the community to participate in the environmental rehabilitation and protection.
Gerard believes community socials, coupled with livelihood activities could be effective tools in information dissemination and environmental education.
